Symptoms and Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica is a type of pain that is related to the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back and down the leg. Although sciatica typically affects only one side of the body, the pain of this condition can be excruciating. While some sufferers feel only occasional discomfort, others are in constant and relentless pain. If you suffer from any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing sciatica.

Sciatica Symptoms

• Shooting pain in the rear and/or leg, which is worse when sitting and often makes standing up difficult
• Tingling or burning sensation that extends down the leg
• Consistent pain on one side of the rear
• Numbness or weakness in the rear and/or leg, sometimes making it hard to move the leg or foot

Sciatica Causes

Sciatica may be caused by a variety of behaviors or underlying conditions. Some of these include:
• Pregnancy
• Being overweight
• Not getting enough exercise
• Wearing high-heeled shoes
• Degenerative disc disease
• Lumbar spinal stenosis (a condition in which the spinal canal in the lower back is narrowed)
• Spondylolisthesis (where one vertebrae slips over another vertebrae)

While there’s no doubt that sciatica can be a very painful condition, there are many effective methods of treating the pain caused by it. If you believe that you or a loved one suffers from sciatica, talk to your doctor and/or a pain management specialist to find out more about treatment options. A trained medical professional can help you determine how to alleviate the discomfort that accompanies sciatica and find the best treatment option for you.
