New Guidelines for Treating Diabetic Nerve Pain

Neuropathy, which is caused by nerve damage can cause extreme and lasting pain in patients. It can even cause several sleep disruptions each night, which also leads to fatigue and depression. It is estimated that approximately four million patients of diabetes suffer from this sort of nerve pain, which can be debilitating on many levels.

A recent issue of Neurology, a medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, reported a new possible treatment for diabetic nerve pain that gives millions of people reason to celebrate. According to this report, there was strong evidence that an anti-seizure medication, known as Pregabalin has proven very effective in the treatment of the lasting form of pain.

While there will be a need for doctors to seriously consider the pros and cons for each patient, this could prove very meaningful in the diabetic community.

In addition to Pregabalin, there have been other treatments that are likely to be effective for the same reasons. This includes anti-depressants, such as venlafaxine, duloxetine, and amitriptyline. It is also believed that TENS, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, would be effective. These changes in treatment options could mean a better way of life for millions of Americans and diabetic patients worldwide.
